Washington D.C. – House Foreign Affairs Lead Republican Michael McCaul released the following statement in response to the situation unfolding in Khartoum, Sudan.

Lead Republican McCaul: “Thousands of Sudanese have risked their lives to peacefully protest the brutal and oppressive dictatorship of President Omar al-Bashir. Today, after three decades in power, he has stepped down. Although his departure is a welcome development, I am deeply concerned as clearer details emerge of the military council that will replace him. Sudan cannot continue with business as usual, with another repressive regime. The transitional authorities must respect the demands of the people for a civilian-led government and move deliberately.

“I commend the people of Sudan for their bravery and commitment to democracy and urge all parties to respect human rights and refrain from violence in the days and weeks ahead. I will continue to closely monitor the situation.”
