On Iran…

“I was in the White House with the president when we talked about options to respond to the UAV that was shot down by the Iranian missiles; a military asset of the United States shot down by Iran. I must say that the president exercised great caution in trying to de-escalate this conflict, not escalate it. One thing he made clear in the room was that he will not stand for a nuclear Iran. That is his redline. If Iran chooses to cross the redline and get nuclear weapons, he will respond in full force and that was pretty clear to me.”

On North Korea…

“We have to engage; the stakes are simply too high right now. Under three prior administrations, concessions were made to the North Koreans and North Korea now has nuclear capability; they have ICBM capability, miniaturized nuclear warheads that can be delivered to the continental United States. This president is very unique in his foreign policy. I think it’s important we engage, but his unconventional approach is very interesting to me because it can break ice and in other ways that have not been done before. We’ve seen this time and time it again, these negotiations, whether it be with Mexico, Canada, what he did with ISIS and many other examples. So I think we have to engage North Korea to do otherwise would really be a big mistake.”
